I’m Mr Atanu Bhattacharjee, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip replacement, knee replacement and revision joint replacement surgery in Swansea and South Wales.

I work with Swansea Bay University Health Board and provide orthopaedic care at Morriston Hospital and Neath Port Talbot Hospital, treating patients from Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and the wider South and South West Wales region.

My specialist clinical practice focuses on hip and knee arthroplasty, including primary and complex joint replacement, revision surgery and the management of complications affecting existing hip and knee replacements.

I completed my specialist orthopaedic training through the All-Wales Orthopaedic Training Programme, gaining broad experience in trauma and orthopaedic surgery before developing a particular interest in hip and knee reconstruction.

I subsequently completed an Advanced Hip and Primary Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, gaining further specialist experience in primary, complex and revision joint replacement surgery.

Southmead provided extensive exposure to complex hip replacement and revision hip surgery, including the management of patients with problems affecting previous joint replacements.

My academic training has developed alongside my clinical career.

I was awarded a PhD in Orthopaedics by Keele University in 2017. My doctoral research was funded through a centre-of-excellence grant from Arthritis Research UK, and was undertaken at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, England.

Alongside my PhD, I completed an MSc in Trauma & Orthopaedics and received the JB Rowlands Medal for my dissertation.

During my orthopaedic training, I also completed a Diploma in Orthopaedic Oncology, accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Research and evidence are an important part of how I approach hip and knee replacement surgery.

My academic work has involved studying long-term joint replacement outcomes using large arthroplasty registries, such as the National Joint Registry and the Swedish Arthroplasty Register.

These large datasets allow surgeons and researchers to examine how different hip and knee replacements perform over many years.

I use evidence from joint replacement registries, published research and contemporary orthopaedic practice when considering implant selection and surgical options for individual patients.

I am also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School, where I contribute to undergraduate medical education and oversee undergraduate placements at Morriston Hospital.

A decision to undergo a hip replacement or knee replacement should be based on more than an X-ray.

Before recommending surgery, I want to understand how your hip or knee problem affects your everyday life — including your pain, mobility, work, sleep, independence and the activities that matter to you.

Where appropriate, we will also consider non-surgical treatment and whether there is a realistic prospect of managing your symptoms without an operation.

If hip or knee replacement surgery is the appropriate next step, I believe patients should understand both the potential benefits and the limitations of surgery.

I will explain what the operation involves, what we are trying to achieve, the important risks and uncertainties, and what you can expect during rehabilitation and recovery.

My approach is to combine specialist hip and knee surgical expertise with careful patient selection, evidence-based decision-making and straightforward communication, so that you can make an informed decision about the treatment that is right for you.
